When decorating our homes, transitional spaces like hallways and landings can often be treated as an after-thought. But this is the first place you enter when you arrive home, so it should provide a warm welcome and a sense of flow.

Discover our guidance for decorating transitional spaces, and create a hallway that will uplift your mood each day…

Planning your hallway or landing project

Your hallway should set the tone for the rest of your home. As you start to plan your project, consider how you want to feel upon entering this space. Do you want to feel soothed and comforted, or would you like a boost of energy? Perhaps you want to design a luxurious scheme that will make an impact and create a lasting impression for guests?

Look for colour palettes that will create your desired atmosphere, but always keep in mind the existing schemes in adjoining rooms. Your hallway colour scheme should give a sense of continuity to your home, transitioning from room to room.

Panelled Wall: Pompeian Ash, Skirting: Giallo, Ceiling: Ceviche

Hallways are often narrow with little natural light, so it’s very important to test shades in situ and think carefully about the colours you are choosing. For real impact, embrace a dark, moody hallway and create a cocooning effect by using deep paint colours all over. But, if you’re looking to create something that is light and uplifting, instead choose colours that will reflect light around, such as fresh, pale neutrals from our ‘Colour Scales’ palette.
