Lily Sawyer @layered.home

“It's a day to remember and be inspired by women who changed history; they are the reason why we enjoy the freedoms that we have today. It's also a reminder that as women, we are powerful, we have a voice, and we make things happen. On International Women's Day, we embrace and celebrate all that and more.”

“International Women’s Day is about support, respect and mentorship. I often take it as an opportunity to make a resolution, whether that is taking on a new mentee or a fundraising target for a non-profit organisation.”

Julie's Dream & Orange Aurora

Julie's Dream & Orange Aurora

Describe your interior style in three words.

“Classic, colourful, romantic.”

Favourite Little Greene colour?

Carmine. I’ve used it so much in my murals over the years. I think I must have painted over 200 roses with it, to the extent that it now feels like a dear friend. It’s the perfect pink: deep, warm and slightly mysterious. It reminds me of those fulsome garden roses at the end of June.”

Do you prioritise style, trends or comfort in your interior design?

“Style combined with practicality. I think, as I’m an architect’s daughter, a sense of functionality is instilled in my very being! But while my father likes to have all walls painted white to showcase the form, I prefer bold colour choices! I love to create spaces that please the eye right down to the detail of the soap dish or the lampshade, but I equally spend hours deliberating the placement of plugs.”

Neutrals or colours?

“Colours! They lift my mood, they set the tone, and they fill me with energy. I have always been drawn to colour, but living in Jaipur for 8 months in total over the past couple of years has trained my eye further.”

Favourite room in your home?

“My daughter’s bedroom. It is an ode to our time in Jaipur and a labour of love, from my hand-painted murals to the curtains made from my block printed rose design. The walls are in Julie's Dream – pink that makes me think of garden roses rather than candy sweetness. Then the accent colours are Carmine and Orange Aurora. I love how the latter cuts through the pinks.

For the murals, I painted elephants, peacocks, monkeys and parakeets across the bespoke cupboards and wardrobe, using a selection of Mischief, Confetti, Pea Green, Boringdon Green, Tusk, Thai Sapphire and Light Peachblossom.”

“A couple of things really make International Women’s Day feel important to me. Firstly, it’s about celebrating the success and creativity of female-founded companies. I think so much has changed over the past three years, with more female start-ups than ever before and I think that’s just incredible.

Having run my own business in the past, I know the challenges it brings, so International Women’s Day also means support and friendship to me. Having a network of women to turn to, doing what you’re doing and really understanding how you feel is so important. Sharing the highs and lows but ultimately helping each other along the journey.”

Joanna & Shirting

Green Stone

Describe your interior style in three words.

“Calming, timeless, Scandi.”

Favourite Little Greene colour?

Joanna. It’s such a versatile neutral and I’ve used it on all the woodwork in my home. I love the warmth it adds to a room, and it pairs really well with Shirting and other whites.”

Do you prioritise style, trends or comfort in your interior design?

“I definitely don’t prioritise trends, as I think a home should be uniquely you and what you love most, not based on the latest look. Staying true to my style is really important, it’s how I can feel most relaxed and settled. Comfort really is non-negotiable; my home needs to feel warm, cosy and tactile…I couldn’t pick between those two!”

Neutrals or colours?

“Neutrals always! I feel at my calmest in a neutral space. The colours feel really grounding and soothing, giving me a home that I can truly recharge in. I then add more dimension and depth through texture with my accessories and furniture.”

Favourite room in your home?

“This is so hard to choose, but I think my living room might be my favourite. It’s filled with different textured cushions, my pride and joy sofa, and lots of natural oak furniture. It just feels restful and safe. I’ve recently added more green into this space to provide continuity with my newly painted kitchen wall which is in Green Stone.”
