Your home is your sanctuary; it should make you feel comforted and uplifted every day. As such, when designing your home interior, it’s important to think about both the look and the feel of your space.

Choosing colours that have a soft, soothing quality is a wonderful way to create a living environment that will boost your mood and support your wellbeing. Read our conversation with @jodie.melissa as she describes how she achieved her tranquil bathroom transformation, and shares her top tips for bringing a true sense of calm to your home…

Tell us about your bathroom project. What was your plan for this space?

“The plan for the space was to – first of all – bring in more Victorian features, but also some colour. We wanted to keep the fixtures and fittings, so we knew paint was going to be a way to transform the room. The plan was to also bring a little slice of the seaside (one of our favourite places) without feeling too heavily influenced by it.”

How did you choose the colour pairing of James and Clay – Pale?

James was the starting colour. We knew we wanted blue and it's the perfect shade. With that, we were initially undecided whether to colour drench or have a complementary colour. In the end we decided to make the woodwork stand out by pairing James with Clay – Pale. It’s a warm-toned neutral without being too yellow, so they work together perfectly, with Clay – Pale helping to bring out the warm tones in the blue.”

We often talk about colours that can bring calm, comfort and wellbeing to the home. Is this an important factor for you? What are some of your favourite shades to achieve this?

“Absolutely! The bathroom felt quite cold before and lacked character, so we really wanted to bring a sense of calm to the space. I love the new ‘Sweet Treats’ collection – there's so many warm, comforting shades (I love the look of Madeleine to bring some joy to a space). I also love the idea of bringing the outside in with some of the green paints. Our next project is the bedroom, and I'm thinking of going with Boringdon Green, which is such a calming shade.”

We know you’re an advocate for slow decorating. Can you tell us a bit about what this means for you?

“It means a few things for me. Firstly, in the literal sense of taking the pressure off to decorate quickly. We've definitely found that going a little slower has helped us make more mindful decisions that work better for us in the long run. It's also thinking about the impact of what we're doing and what can be saved or re-used. We've upcycled and kept many things and managed to turn them into our own, or bought things second-hand to give a new lease of life. Lastly, it's thinking about the materials and brands we're choosing. I love that Little Greene’s Intelligent finishes offer product performance alongside eco-friendly credentials.”

Finally, we’d love to hear your top three tips for creating an interior that will boost your mood, relieve stress and support your wellbeing.

“1. Something I've learnt since decorating is how important the amount of light in a room is. I really recommend thinking about the orientation of your room when choosing colours. For example, if you have a north-facing space, opt for colours that will bring a sense of warmth and light to the room (or create a cosy cocoon).

2. I'd also think about storage solutions that minimise clutter. I'm a firm believer in "tidy space, tidy mind", so taking time to plan out storage will definitely help you to enjoy your decorated space every single day.

3. Lastly, bring in things that feel special or sentimental to boost your mood. I painted my home office in Castell Pink. As much as I love the colour, it's also inspired by a castle in North Wales close to where I grew up, so it's a lovely reminder when I'm in the space."
